Daedelus – Fair Weather Friends

How cute is this?

To be honest, I can’t take the credit for uncovering it, props to Nolwenn and Jane for unearthing this little gem. Daedelus – yes, correct spelling – is due to play Whelans on April 12th. The guys were looking for interesting live acts to cover, and this seems worthy of a mention. I’ll plead ignorance and admit that this one is new to me. Maybe I’m getting old and losing my touch. Next I’ll be saying that music just doesn’t sound like it used to. The stuff that kids listen to these days, it all sounds like noise to me!
Enjoy, great song and vid.

Islands return with details of a new album, and an Irish date

Return to the Sea – the debut album from Montreal band Islands – still receives heavy rotation on the stereo over at IPTOR HQ. So it delights and excites me no end to announce that Islands return with their sophomore release Arm’s Way, via Rough Trade Records on April 18th. Rising from the ashes of 3 piece indie band The Unicorns, Messrs Thorburn and Thompson reconvened to release one of the finest avant-pop records of 2006. However, history repeated itself once more, and Jamie Thompson announced his departure from the band later that same year. So it’s left to Nicholas ‘Nick Diamonds’ Thorburn to return under the Islands moniker, with a host of new faces in tow. You can have a sneak preview of new song The Arm, from the forthcoming album here. If you’re new to Islands have a listen to Swans, also contained on their myspace. Glorious leftfield pop, with more twists and turns than a Hitchcock thriller. The video below is for Rough Gem, also taken from their debut album.

Convinced? Well you won’t have too long to wait to see them live. Forever Presents – the independent promoters that put on the incredible Explosions in the Sky gig last Saturday in Tripod – bring Islands to Dublin for a show in February, Monday the 18th in Whelan’s. See you down the front!

I’m all out of love part 2

I skipped Dizzee Rascal on Thursday night for 2 reasons.

1. I hate Groove Armada

2. It wasn’t down at IMMA, it was moved to Tripod.

Friday night provided another chance to see o’death in Whelan’s. This Brooklyn-based 5 piece played here a few months ago, supporting Goodtime John on a wet Sunday night. They blew me away completely, and I remember leaving the gig thinking they were the best live band I’d seen in a long time. I think the 20-30 people that were there felt the same also, as they were all there again on Friday night.

Their album, Head Home was released a few months back between both gigs. Although great, it fails to capture the energy and sheer chaos of their live show. It’s a tough one this, as I’ve been raving about the band recently, so much so that when people finally cave in and check out their myspace, or buy/download the album, they’re somewhat underwhelmed. I’ve decided to adopt the positive slant and run with this theory instead. o’death live, and o’death on record are two very diferent things. The key here is to check the band out live, and the album will then make perfect sense, whether you’ve heard it before or not. The reason I still feel they’re the best live band I’ve seen all year is that they’ve succeeded in bringing something new and totally different to the o’death experience, and the live experience, and that’s what live music is all about.

We drank, we laughed, we danced!
